Car Talk 5/31

Miss MoneyPenny has been hot under the collar because she was not looking forward to wasting her precious time down at the dealership waiting room.  I was recently notified that there were two recalls for my 2003 Honda CR-V and only the dealer could take care of it, no charge to me.  When I made the appointment I was told it would be four hours!!  Miss MoneyPenny hates to wait.

When I pulled into the service bay this morning I was pleased to see that they were ready for me.  The service manager went over what was going to be done to my car and told me there would be no charge.  I piped up with how about a complimentary oil change for my time and smiled.  He said that would be great - how about we wash your car and give you a free coffee drink of your choice while you wait, also?  I told him that would not be a problem and smiled.

As I was sitting in the waiting room drinking my free mocha and using their WIFI, I thought about how I was going to have my regular mechanic do an oil change, new belts and hoses, and change out the coolant and filters.  I usually budget around $600 for this.  And it is a pain to be without your car for the day, so I asked how much the dealer would charge.  He gave me a $350 ball park.  I said do it and throw in a new battery, while you are at it.  The grand total including the battery was $451.79 with tax.  I asked for the senior discount (10%) and got it.

Now this does not mean that I'm gonna break up with my local mechanic.  No way!!  This was just a one day stand.  Everybody enjoys a little strange now and then, don't you agree?  And it only took two hours.  Smile.

Hopefully you are not a slob like Miss MoneyPenny and are able to keep on top of your household while holding down a job.  I had no idea that things had gotten so out of hand!!  Every day I try to tackle a project and today it was my bed.  I have an eyelet bedskirt and shams on my bed with a quilt and I can't remember the last time I flipped my mattress to get that bedskirt out, and yes, I will be going to the chiropractor after that.  I feel absolutely lucky that I didn't break out a window with that big old wobbly queen sized mattress, but I eventually got it flipped and back in place with a clean bedskirt.

I've also organized my refrigerator and taken inventory, but I didn't go so crazy as to actually clean it yet.  That will be a big project involving vacuuming the coils which can really be dangerous.  One time the vacuum cleaner actually sucked up one of my long pony tails while I had my head down trying to see what I was doing with the attachment.  I really hate the smell of burning hair!! but thank God I have long arms and was able to reach up and turn that beast off.  Close call, there.

Book Shelf 5/28

One of the biggest enjoyments of Miss MoneyPenny's life has been reading, and now that I'm retired I plan to do a lot more of it - along with catching as many matinees at The Rose as possible.  Actually, this weekend we saw The Exotic Marigold Hotel and it was everything I hoped it would be.  Go see it, if you get the chance. 

Anyway, I wanted to make sure that you know about the world's best book on gardening.  The title is Green Thoughts: a Writer in the Garden by Eleanor Perenyi and it is a jewel.  I came across it back in the 80's when it was still in hardcover.  I was charmed by the author's picture on the back.  She was sitting out in her garden in a lawn chair and looked to be holding a martini and a cigarette.  I knew I had to read what she had to say and I've been hers ever since.

Mrs. Perenyi, who died in 2009 at the age of 91, was married to an Hungarian count if you can believe that.  I'm not real sure of the details, but she lived in a castle over there and they were run out by World War II and all of it's goings on.  It was at the castle, as a young bride, that she developed a love of gardening, particularly organic gardening.  After that, they lived in New York with a home in Connecticut, where she eventually moved and took up gardening full time.

Green Thoughts is in essay form so it is perfect for beside the bed for night time reading.  I've been trying to remember how I ended up with my paperback copy and I believe that Miss Know-It-All found it for me.  For sure, she was somehow involved, but we both love that picture of her, which shows that she is our kind of woman.  And that lady has opinions!!  This is kind of like Elizabeth Zimmerman, but instead of knitting, we are talking gardening here.  Here is a sample that I lifted from her obit in The New York Times:

“It hasn’t escaped me that mine is the only WASP garden in town to contain dahlias, and not the discreet little singles either,” Mrs. Perenyi wrote. “Some are as blowsy as half-dressed Renoir girls and they do shoot up to prodigious heights. But to me they are sumptuous, not vulgar, and I love their colors, their willingness to bloom until the frost kills them and, yes, their assertiveness.”

It was in reading her essay on dahlias that I realized that I had done something wrong when I planted mine in the veggie garden and they had yet to show their little faces.  I got on the phone and called the dahlia expert, my sister, and she agreed with Mrs. Perenyi (I just can't call her "Eleanor") and I think that I am back in business.

So if you are a gardener and a reader, you are in luck as this book is still in print.  I've learned a lot from this lady who writes so beautifully.  Her feisty attitudes and opinions are just icing on the cake.  I know that her picture is a little blurry, but you get the idea.

Life in the Not so Fast Lane

It is day three of Miss MoneyPenny's retirement from the rat race and there is still a part of me that thinks that I better get with it because I have to go to work on Tuesday.  This is going to be an adjustment, albeit a pleasant one, but change is change.

I was talking with my friend Miss MaggieMay today, who also just retired, and we decided that we have to have a daily project other than laundry, cooking, etc. or we would just wallow around on the couch watching reruns of NCIS in our jammies.  Today the main projects were recycling and getting the guy from Seattle's car washed and vacuumed.  We also got the tomatoes planted.

We had to go to Home Depot for plants for the deck pots because I missed the sale at QFC and I couldn't find what I needed locally, which is a shame.  I thought that QFC put their geraniums on sale way too early for this area and they showed it.  Can you say "Frost Bite?"  Anyway, I'm happy with the quality and price of the plants from Home Depot and I will put pictures up when the pots are planted.  Right now, they are getting used to living in my climate, crowded up next to the house, with each other for company.

I took a couple snaps of my garden because I think that it is so pretty and has been such a labor of love.  This is the first year that my "Cherokee Chief" dogwood has really bloomed.  I moved him three times before he was finally happy.  Look fast at the poppy because as soon as it even looks like it is going to rain, it gives up, but I just love the whore house red color.  We planted the tomatoes in the flower beds this year, right up against the house, which has the hot southerly exposure.  I'm thinking that this might finally be my year for tomatoes.  And Don Juan, the rose, is starting to bloom and smell.  Ignore the rust spots.  I do.

It's official!!  Miss MoneyPenny is retired from the 8 to 5 grind!!  I finally did it and now I'm running around in circles.  Normally I would get a load of laundry started tonight because the weekend has always been choreographed so that I could get everything done and have a little fun and rest too. Guess what?  I'm not doing laundry until I run out of clean underwear.  How's that for rebellion?

Anyway, enough of all this juvenile behavior.  We have to go shopping for groceries and these are the items that I'm looking at this week from QFC:

The mayonnaise with the coupon is a good stock up deal at $1.99, so I'm gonna stock up.  Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce is what I use for the famous pulled pork sandwiches on the 4th, so will buy four and pay 75 cents each.  I know the cherries aren't cheap, but I love 'em.  I'm buying a pound and I'm not sharing and doesn't a steak sound good for a Memorial Day cookout?  I generally cook enough to have leftover steak to put on top of a salad the next day.

Before I forget, I purchased a 35 pound bag of Kirkland brand premium dog food at Costco the other day.  I usually pay $29.99 for a 15 pound bag of premium dog food locally and at PetSmart.  The Kirkland brand that I bought is salmon and sweet potato, plus it is grain free.  It was priced at $33.55.  This seems like a screaming deal to me, but the jury is still out because the dogs have only been eating it for six days.  So far nobody is throwing up or itching and they like it.  I'll give it a couple of weeks before I relax and give it the MoneyPenny Seal of Approval.  I'll let you know.

Health Counts Gift Cards

Miss MoneyPenny would be remiss if she didn't mention the Health Counts Wellness Program.  I'm not a big fan of health insurance companies, but as far as they go, the Regence Uniform Medical Plan ain't too bad.  I've discovered over the years that keeping a file with my medical bills and insurance forms works best for me.  Once a month I sit down and dig through it, matching everybody up, then paying out.  If you look at all these papers carefully, you sometimes can find mistakes and save yourself some money.

Anyway, about this program.  The deal is once a year, you log onto their website and fill out your annual health assessment.  This takes about 20 minutes and you need to know your weight, blood pressure, drinking and smoking habits, etc.  When you are done, they have a few suggestions like lose weight, quit drinking, exercise more, eat better - you get the drill.  Then they send you an email that gets lost in the junk, so be on the lookout.  This email is where you choose where your $30 gift card is coming from.  I always choose Macy's and it comes in about a week.  Slick.

Tomorrow is my last day of employment.  Yippee skippee!!  I made it!!  Anyway, I will be COBRAing Regence for 18 months until I'm 65 and then using them for my supplemental through the state after that.  This is not going to be cheap, but I've budgeted for it and think it will work.  I'll keep you posted on how all this works in my new life of retirement which I'm sure I'm just gonna hate.

Big Fat Check 5/15/12

Miss MoneyPenny got her Big Fat Check.  Did you?  I was bragging to my sister SmartyPants about my Ebates check for $30.55 when she said hers was for $80 something!!  That girl sure knows how to shop and get the deal.

Today is the last day of the 13% Ebate for a surprisingly good amount of stores.  I took advantage of two of them and one has already posted into my Ebates account.  I'll probably have to claim the other, but no problem.  We are talking free money here.  If you are a savvy online shopper, this is the way to go.  And if you score free shipping and no tax, you've hit the mother lode.

Costco Coupons 5/10 - 6/3

Just in case you are trying to quit smoking and want to try the patches, the best place to buy them is Target.  Their store brand price even beats Costco with a coupon.  This good deal is courtesy of the guy from Seattle who has made smoking and patches a lifetime career.  Although Miss MoneyPenny has never been a smoker, I know what a tough gig it is to quit after watching my favorite ex-husband try and fail many times.  Good luck.

I didn't get down to Costco until yesterday, so these coupons have been out for a while, but there are some good ones worth noting.  My sister Miss SmartyPants took advantage of the coupon for a new smart phone and ended up getting an app for the Internet at her home.  I have no idea how this works, but she assures me it is cool and the guy in the Verizon booth at Costco got her going on this.  This is a good thing for people who live out in Internet free zones.  Also, there is no wait at the booth like at the Verizon store, which is a big plus, if you ask me.

We buy all of our supplements at Costco and as many of the Kirkland brand as possible, so if you need 'em, jump on 'em as there are coupons.  Others that I'm looking at are for Reynolds Foil, Ziploc Bags, Advil and Advil PM, Cascade Action Pacs and Brita Pitcher and/or filters.

There is also a $70 coupon off Michelin Tires, which I took advantage of two years ago.  That reminds me - it is time for my free tire rotation, which comes with the set of tires.  Good to take care of the tires.

Food Waste Update:

What you are looking at is two lemons that got buried in the fruit bowl under a bunch of mail.  They were not even a week old.  I'm going to trade in that bowl because this isn't the first surprising mishap.  I'm truly ashamed of the withered up apples.  They were mushy and the skin was tough, so instead of making fruit salad out of them, I ignored them, hoping that they would become crisp and juicy, which did not happen.  The pull date on the two corn tortillas was 3/27.

QFC has a pretty decent ad this week.  They are still running the "Buy 10, Save $4" promotion and I will be taking advantage of that.  Be sure and load up your ecoupons from the QFC site and then print them out.  I never remember what I have otherwise and I'm always surprised when I see it on my receipt.

According to queenbeecoupons.com they are still running Seattle's Best Coffee at $6.49 after the promotion and there is a coupon for $1.50 in the 4/22/S insert, making it $4.99 each.  If you need coffee, that is a pretty good stock up price for the freezer, so I'll be looking for that one.

Okay savvy shoppers, today Ebates is offering 13% for several stores, including Macy's and Nordstrom.  I'm down to my last half bottle of Youth Dew, so I've been keeping an eye out.  Youth Dew does not go on sale.  Period.  And it is the only perfume that I wear.  I've worn it so long that I can't even smell it any more, but I get compliments so it must still be right for me.

This is how I worked the deal:  I ordered two bottles at $34 each and got free shipping because it was over $50.  I really hate paying for shipping.  I would have purchased a couple more bottles, but that was all I had in my "Beauty Fund."

Happy Mother's Day!!

Miss MoneyPenny had a great Mother's Day and hopes that if you are a mom, that you did also.  All we moms want is to be remembered and maybe have a steak grilled up for us, although it is nice to get presents.  Yesterday we headed down to Silverdale just for that at my son's house ( he wanted to go fishing today, I heard somebody slip), but that is fine with me, as long as I get remembered.

Speaking of presents, the guy from Seattle added to my charm bracelet and it is really blingy.  Who doesn't need a diamond encrusted flip flop on their bracelet?  This really gave me a big thrill.  Here it is on the right:

Enough of that.  Today we worked outside most of the day and got a lot done in the front flower beds.  The guy from Seattle takes great pride in his weeding and I'm all for that because I really hate to do it.  I'm quite happy that everything made it through the winter just fine. 

I don't know if this happens to you, but it does to me and my daughter-in-law, who is a master gardener.  We were discussing it yesterday when we were outside viewing her beautiful landscaping.  Why do perennials come up in different places than where you planted them is the question that boggles the mind.  Do they have big parties all winter under the dirt and forget where they live?  Let me know if you have the answer.

We also moved and worked over the big herb pots.  They were extremely root bound and should do well with new dirt.  We added two each of thyme and sage to the oregano and marjoram and moved them onto the corner of the deck so that we can run out and cut a few sprigs when needed.

The gerbara daisies are part of my Mother's Day presents and they are going on the front porch where I hope that I don't kill them.  I've not had good luck with them in the past, but they are so beautiful.  They may be too tender for our cold nights, even in summer.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Mother's Day is coming up this weekend and it looks like it is going to be a beaut.  I'm trying to keep myself under control and not plant the deck pots as the temperature this morning was 32 and that is just too cold for tender geraniums and petunias.  I just know that it will be gorgeous and in the 70s this weekend but by the middle of next week it will probably be back in the usual 50s, so I'm gonna wait another week.  I hope.

A friend of mine said today that she would just like to walk into QFC and feel that there was real food to be had there.  Of course she was exaggerating, but sometimes it does feel like we have to walk through a minefield to find pure food that has not been born in a factory.  Both she and I are doing more and more of our food shopping at Chimacum Corners, but I still fly through QFC and snatch up the loss leaders.  Here is what I'm looking at this week and I couldn't find any coupons listed at couponmom.com:

I never thought that I would be paying $16.99 a pound for halibut, when back in the day, my favorite ex-husband used to bring so much of it home from his fishing trips, that I actually got tired of it.  Those were the days.  According to the fish lady at QFC, we can expect to pay these prices for the foreseeable future and I will, but just not eat such a big piece or let any of it go to waste.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was on the hunt for some summer shoes that were not flip flops, which just kill my feet if I wear them too much.  I found a great pair of shoes that actually feel better than not wearing shoes and I always go barefoot.  These guys were not cheap - $84.95 - and I got them online from The Walking Store.  I even had to pay shipping!! $8.95 but I did stay under the $100 plus tax that I would have paid at Macy's for Jambus and I like them much better.  I also got $6.37 added to my Ebates account. 

The picture doesn't show the color very well.  They are dark khaki and pink and the model is Whisper and the brand is Keen.  This is information for my sister Miss SmartyPants because we always have to have what the other one has.

Ugly Garden Sloggers

I don't remember what I paid for the world's ugliest garden clogs, but it had to be too much.  These shoes are a disgrace but they don't get lost and nobody else tries to wear them on the way to the compost.

Today was the first day that it was warm enough to sit out on the deck and drink ice tea.  The weather was perfect and we got right to the planting.  Along with the lettuces, greens and chards, we now have potatoes, two kinds of onions, shallots, beets, zinnias  and dahlias in.  We will start planting the bush beans in a couple of weeks and the peppers in June when it warms up enough.  The tomatoes are going out front in the flower bed against the hot southern wall and the zucchinis will be in the old wheel barrow again.  Here's a picture complete with new razor wire to keep out the dogs:

This plant is bullet proof, but be sure and plant it like bamboo because it will own the landscaping if you let it.  Other than that small issue, I think that it is beautiful.

Costco Trip 05/05

Today was the last day of the current Costco coupons and there was some good ones that I wanted to use, so we headed out early.  Everything on my list had a coupon except for the bananas and the Mini Babybels.  I just love those things.  They really hit the spot when I need a little shot of something.

Several of these items will not have to be purchased for about a year, such as the 10 pack of family sized Kleenex, Palmolive, Resolve Spray 'n Wash, fish oil and vitamin C.  If you have the room, stock up.  I had my walk-in bathroom closet worked over so I could buy things at rock bottom and store them until needed.

Probably the most spendy thing here for me is the Refresh Eye Drops, but the cheapest place to buy them is Costco, and when there is a coupon ($3) I stock up.  What would really be nice is if I didn't have dry allergic eyes, but it is what it is.  And, yeah, I'm on a Special K kick.

I had $29.50 in coupons, so my grand total was $137.29, including $10.28 sales tax.  I think that this was a good haul.  These are items that I use everyday and they will not be wasted, but I do have about 30 cans of a case of 48 V-8s that I bought last fall.  They are headed for the food bank because I really don't drink as much V-8 as I thought I did.  You have to be careful with Costco and it is my mission to figure out how best to shop there and I'm gonna share.

Full Flower Moon

Usually Miss MoneyPenny complains and bitches about this and that, but today I want to tell you a story about paying it forward.

Now you know what tree hugging animal lovers Miss MoneyPenny and her friends and family are.  We all go to great lengths and expense for our creatures that depend on us, but Mr. and Miss KnowItAll have taken it a step further.

The story starts when Miss KIA(aka Miss KnowItAll) rescued a nine year old gentleman Basenji (Uno) from the pound.  His master was going to the "home" and pets were not allowed, so she offered to take him.  She took him home and fed him good food and gave him lots of love and dental care.  He became the beautiful dog that he was meant to be.

After several months, Miss KIA was talking to a man at the library who knew Uno when he was a pup.  She mentioned that she was looking for the elderly lady who always walked her old husky by the library as she hadn't seen her for a couple of months.  This is the shocker - this man knew this lady and said that her beloved old dog had died.  Come to find out, again, another shocker - Uno had belonged to this lady's daughter.  The daughter left him with her because she was moving and she had to take him to the pound as she already had a big dog (the husky).

Of course, you know where I'm going with this, Miss KIA got in contact with the lady and, another shocker, Uno remembered her!!  Mr. and Miss KIA left him with her, along with a big bag of food and offers to help with vet bills and dogsitting.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see the two of them out walking.  Uno has a big smile on his doggy face as he carefully leads the way for his lady.  Is there a dry eye in the house?  True story.

Anyway, Saturday night is the Full Flower Moon, so whatever it is that you are supposed to do on this moon, do it.

Usually when I look through the coupon inserts on Sundays, I will cut the good ones out that I know that I am going to use.  Lately there just hasn't been any real good ones.  I can't tell you how offended I was to see that the Tide coupon was for .25!!  They are always for $1.00 and Tide ain't getting any cheaper.  What gives?

Pepper

Sprinkle lemon over fish and put under the broiler until almost done.  Mix mayonnaise, cheese, green onions and pepper.  You can adjust the ingredients to suit, it is always delish.  Spread topping on fish and finishing cooking until done and top is browned and bubbly.  This might be too rich for salmon but is fabulous on halibut, sole and rockfish.  Pass the lemons.
